Creamy Vietnamese Iced Coffee: Easy 5-Minute Recipe

  • Author: Eden
  • Total Time: 7 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x

Description

A rich, syrupy, and creamy Vietnamese iced coffee that takes only five minutes to make. This recipe uses a traditional phin filter for a concentrated brew mixed with sweetened condensed milk or heavy cream for a dessert-like texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 23 tablespoons dark roast coffee beans, coarsely ground
  • 23 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or whole milk for a lighter version)
  • 1 cup packed ice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, if using heavy cream)
  • 23 ounces boiling water

Instructions

  1. Add ice to a tall glass. If using heavy cream, add it to the glass with the ice now.
  2. Place the bottom part of the Vietnamese coffee filter (phin) on a small mug.
  3. Add the coarsely ground coffee to the filter and level it without packing it down.
  4. Place the press plate on top and gently twist to secure it snugly.
  5. Pour a tiny splash of hot water (about 1 tablespoon) over the grounds to bloom the coffee. Wait 30 seconds.
  6. Pour the remaining hot water (2-3 ounces) into the phin and place the lid on top.
  7. Allow the coffee to drip slowly for 4-5 minutes. Adjust pressure if dripping is too fast or slow.
  8. Once dripping stops, remove the phin. Stir the sweetened condensed milk into the hot coffee until dissolved.
  9. Pour the sweetened coffee concentrate over the ice and cream in the tall glass.
  10. Stir gently to combine and serve immediately.

Notes

Use a coarse grind to prevent clogging the filter. If you don’t have a phin, a French press can be used as an alternative, though the texture will differ. For a dairy-free version, substitute heavy cream with coconut cream and condensed milk with coconut sugar. The coffee concentrate can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
