Description
A cozy, seasonal dessert featuring tender spiced pears topped with a crunchy, buttery oat and brown sugar crumble. This easy-to-make crisp is perfect for autumn gatherings and requires minimal effort for maximum flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 5 large Bosc or Anjou pears, peeled, cored, and sliced into ¼-inch wedges
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- Pinch of flaky sea salt
- Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, toss sliced pears with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Let sit for 10 minutes to draw out juices.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, granulated sugar, and chopped nuts.
- Add cold, cubed butter to the dry mixture. Use fingers, a fork, or a pastry cutter to mix until the texture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter clumps.
- Pour the spiced pears into a 9×9 inch baking dish and spread evenly.
- Scatter the topping mixture over the pears. Do not press down. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
- Place the baking dish on a rimmed baking sheet to catch any bubbling juices.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and juices are bubbling. Tent with foil if browning too quickly after 30 minutes.
- Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow juices to thicken.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
Use firm pears like Bosc or Anjou to prevent mushiness. Keep butter cold for a flaky topping. Always bake on a rimmed sheet to catch spills. Can be made gluten-free using GF oats and flour. Can be made vegan using vegan butter and maple syrup.
